I’ve put together this list of the greatest psychological thrillers 2020s to show you the must-see movies. Even though the decade is only six years old, we’ve already seen some incredible films. There are movies about terrifying monsters and others that capture that strange feeling of being trapped that we all experienced during the pandemic. Thrillers may not be as spectacular as big superhero movies, but they’re definitely still the best part of going to the movies.
There have been some great movies this year, such as Obsession and Backrooms. But the five films on this list are in a league of their own. They offer the best screenplay, the best acting, and the best direction I’ve seen in a long time.
“EDDINGTON” IS A COVID THRILLER THAT REALLY GETS UNDER YOUR SKIN
Ari Aster makes some truly strange movies. His new film, “Eddington”, is a perfect example of that. Imagine the film as a neo-western inspired by the COVID-19 lockdown. The story is set in a town where Police Chief Joe Cross hates Mayor Ted Garcia. A dispute breaks out that turns extremely violent. The film is hard to watch because you feel just as trapped as the people in the movie.
The film brilliantly illustrates how angry and bitter people have been in recent years. Everything, from politics to interpersonal relationships, seems broken. By the end of the film, you’ll be completely speechless. It’s simply a wild roller coaster ride.
“THE INVISIBLE MAN” REIMAGINES ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST POPULAR CLASSICS
You’ve probably already heard of “The Invisible Man” by H. G. Wells. It’s an old story from 1897. Well, in 2020, Leigh Whannell directed a new version. In it, Elisabeth Moss plays a woman fleeing her abusive boyfriend. Then someone invisible starts stalking her. He even tries to frame her for murder. Everyone thinks she’s losing her mind, but she knows the truth.
This movie is sort of like the 2020s version of the old classic “Gaslight”. It’s about how people are manipulated. It’s scary, but also very clever. You know what’s going on, but watching the character struggle while no one believes her is truly intense.
“ANATOMY OF A FALL” IS A MODERN THRILLER MASTERPIECE
This movie is about a family named the Voyters who live in the Alps. The husband, Samuel, is found dead. The police believe that his wife, Sandra, committed the crime. The only witness is their son, who is visually impaired. The entire film turns into a major court case in which all the secrets of their marriage come to light.
The coolest thing about it is that the film never reveals whether she really did it. You have to decide that for yourself. It’s a mix of courtroom drama and thriller. How you feel about the movie depends on your own life experiences.
“IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU” IS BOTH THRILLING AND CREEPY
Rose Byrne plays the role of Linda in this film. She’s a mother living in New York who works as a therapist. Her husband is away, and she’s trying to handle everything all by herself. It’s too much for her. You watch as she slowly breaks down. It’s a mix of family drama, comedy, and a full-blown psychological struggle.
Mary Bronstein, the director, makes you feel as if you’re right there with her. It’s very easy to empathize with her. It shows that the scariest movies are the ones that could actually happen in real life.
“SPEAK NO EVIL” WILL STAY IN AUDIENCES’ MEMORIES FOR YEARS TO COME
A Danish family meets a Dutch family while on vacation. They decide to visit them later, but the hosts aren’t as nice as they initially seemed. The guests begin to wonder if the hosts’ child is actually their own. The situation escalates, and they must fight to escape.
James McAvoy stars in a remake, but the original from 2022 is the one you absolutely must watch. The film is designed to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible. The longer you watch, the crazier and more violent the villains become. It’s honestly the pinnacle of the genre.
