CD Projekt Red is finally giving us a clear glimpse into its future plans, and it’s pretty exciting to see how the company is implementing its strategy regarding development resources and the release dates for “The Witcher 4” and “Cyberpunk 2”. They want to be open with fans this time around, which represents a huge change from the rocky launch of “Cyberpunk 2077.” The fact that they’re being honest about the direction their work is taking makes me, as a player, feel much better.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE WITCHER 4 CONTINUES, CYBERPUNK 2 IS SLOWLY GETTING UNDERWAY
In April, nearly 1,000 developers were working on major projects at the studio. That’s a huge team. They broke down the numbers for us: 513 employees were working on “The Witcher 4,” while about 163 were working on “Cyberpunk 2.” Since then, they’ve hired 70 new employees, most of whom are now working on these major games to help out.
“The Witcher 4” is clearly the main focus right now. That’s where the majority of the staff is working. “Cyberpunk 2” is also slowly picking up steam. The project is growing, but it takes time. That’s understandable, since it’s still in an early phase of its lifecycle.
The company appears to have a concrete plan. The target release date for the next “Witcher” game is 2028. Prior to that, the remastered version of “The Witcher 3” will be released in 2026, followed by the “Songs of the Past” DLC in 2027. That seems like a solid schedule. However, there are also other projects in the works, such as the mysterious “Project Hadar” and a “Witcher” multiplayer game called “Project Sirius.” The number of employees suggests that these games are still a long way off.
They’ve also announced some pretty ambitious goals for the future. They want to release a completely new trilogy of “The Witcher” games in just six years. That would mean new games in 2030 and 2032. That sounds incredibly fast. I’m really curious to see how they plan to pull this off without burning out their entire staff.
“Cyberpunk 2” is still a bit more of a mystery. We know it’s in pre-production, but that’s about all we know. It will definitely be released after “The Witcher 4.” I’d guess we might see it around 2029 or 2031. It all depends on how the team positions itself over the next few years. It’s fun to watch the company grow and see how they take these big steps with their favorite worlds.
