best Netflix mini series
Netflix has a huge selection of miniseries. I really love them. Why? Because you don’t have to commit to watching them for years on end. You can just grab a snack, sit on the couch, and binge-watch the whole story over a weekend. Or maybe over a few weeknights if you’re busy. That’s the best way to watch TV.
Some series are just okay. Others are great. But only a few are true masterpieces. The shows on this list really draw you in. They offer major plot twists and plenty of suspense. I binge-watched them all in one go. I enjoyed them so much that I’d love to watch them again. I’ve been a Netflix fan since the early days of streaming, so I know a good series when I see one. I look for great acting and stories that keep you hooked.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
First on the list is “His & Hers” from 2026
The series didn’t grab me quite as much as the others, but the acting is wonderful. It has a convoluted plot that keeps you guessing until the very last moment. You don’t see the ending coming. It’s incredible.
Then there’s Griselda from 2024
Sofia Vergara is usually known for comedies, so it was a surprise to see her here. She played a terrifying, complex drug lord. She really proved everyone wrong. Her performance was intense and very authentic.
“Midnight Mass” from 2021
* is also worth watching. Hamish Linklater is simply fantastic as a mysterious priest. He moves to a small town and tries to lead everyone back to the faith. But something is definitely off about him. It’s a very cool and creepy take on the vampire theme. Plus, the series offers some truly profound insights into life.
BODYGUARD
“Bodyguard” was that British series that just popped up on Netflix one day. I clicked on it because I saw that Richard Madden from “Game of Thrones” was playing the lead role. That was a great decision. This political thriller is only six episodes long, but it’s an absolute standout. Madden plays David Budd. He’s a soldier struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. After defusing a bomb on a train, he’s assigned a new mission: protecting a politician. Before long, he finds himself caught up in a massive conspiracy. This puts him and his family in real danger.
If you liked “The Night Agent”, you’ll like this series, too. They’re very similar. This one also tackles major themes like terrorism and government secrets. The series was even nominated for an Emmy. It’s basically a modern classic that you absolutely should watch.
Must-watch: If you like thrilling political series that tell a complete story in just a few episodes.
Skip it: If you’re not interested in politics and are looking for a different kind of story.
ADOLESCENCE
“Adolescence” was the series everyone was talking about in 2025. It’s not flashy. There are no huge explosions or crazy stunts. It’s actually pretty quiet and slow-paced. But that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. It’s a very heavy crime drama. It begins with a 13-year-old boy named Jamie being arrested for murder. As the mother of a teenager, I found it really hard to watch.
The rest of the four-part series is very intense. You see how the family tries to cope with the public shame and the truth about what happened. The series is shot in such a way that each episode basically consists of a single long take. It feels very real. The third episode is the best. Jamie talks to a psychologist about his life and the internet culture he’s trapped in. It’ll give you goosebumps.
Must-watch: If you’re a parent and want to learn more about the dangers children face on social media today.
Better not to watch: If you get worked up easily or are looking for a series with big, elaborate action scenes.
BABY REINDEER
I started watching “Baby Reindeer” on the plane. I was so horrified that I had to hide my face from the person sitting next to me. The series is based on a true story by its creator, Richard Gadd. He plays a man named Donny Dunn. Donny is a bartender who wants to become a comedian. He meets a woman named Martha who starts stalking him. But that’s not all. Donny also has to come to terms with a horrific experience from his past in which he was drugged and abused. It’s a very disturbing series.
The series is important because it deals with sexual assault against men. That isn’t shown very often on TV. Seeing Donny struggle as his life falls apart is so sad. Knowing that it really happened makes it even more frightening. When he has a breakdown during a comedy performance, it really breaks your heart.
Must-watch: If you want to see two great performances and don’t mind heavy stories based on real events.
Skip it: If you don’t want to see anything about sexual assault or things that are too real.
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER
This is a brilliant series that some may have already forgotten. “The Fall of the House of Usher” is based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. It’s all about the downfall of a wealthy man named Roderick Usher. He runs a large pharmaceutical company. All six of his children die in truly creepy ways. Before each death, a strange woman named Verna appears. If you’re familiar with Poe’s poems, you’ll notice that her name is an anagram for “Raven.”
It’s a Gothic horror story that will captivate you. You’ll be dying to know why Verna is doing this and what Roderick did to deserve it. It’s creepy and suspenseful. You’ll love and hate the characters at the same time. Once you start watching the eight episodes, you won’t be able to stop.
Must-watch: If you love horror and the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Best to skip: If you don’t know who Poe is and don’t like dark, creepy themes.
THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT
Even after six years, The Queen’s Gambit is still a huge hit on Netflix. The series made Anya Taylor-Joy a star. She plays a girl who grows up in an orphanage and realizes she’s a chess prodigy. She has to make her way in the world during the 1950s. That’s difficult because people don’t believe a girl can be the best player. At the same time, she’s also battling her own inner demons.
Real chess players were thrilled by how authentic the series was. In fact, the series has inspired many to take up chess again. Everything about it is perfect, from the acting to the visual presentation. It might even spark a desire in you to learn the game.
Must-watch: If you’re looking for a great story about a woman who triumphs against all odds.
Skip it: If you’ve read the book and were hoping for something much darker.
