Ridley Scott has directed some of the coolest movies of all time, such as Alien and Gladiator. Everyone knows his name. But his latest science fiction project, the movie “The Dog Stars Ridley Scott Bomb”, had a hard time drawing audiences to theaters this weekend. It seems that even a famous director can’t always count on a hit.
Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi epic flopped at the box office
The film is based on a 2012 book by Peter Heller. It’s a story about the end of the world. Jacob Elordi plays a pilot named Hig. Josh Brolin plays a former Marine named Bangley. They’re simply trying to stay alive after a deadly flu has wiped out most of humanity. Some liked the hopeful tone, but other critics felt the film was far too long and strongly resembled other series like “The Last of Us”.
The film hit theaters last weekend. It didn’t do well. It landed in fifth place at the box office. In the U.S., it grossed only about $8 million. That’s not exactly impressive. The budget was over $80 million, so it should have grossed far more. Things probably won’t get any better next week either. It looks like yet another flop of 2026, joining the ranks of films like “Supergirl” and “Masters of the Universe”.
That reminds me of his 2021 film, *The Last Duel*. That one wasn’t a big hit at the box office either. But Ridley Scott is 88 years old and still going strong. He has major hits like *The Martian* and *Gladiator II* under his belt. He’s already hard at work on a new Treasure Island movie starring Hugh Jackman. He’ll be just fine.
Competition at the Box Office
Other movies were also in theaters this weekend. A horror movie called “Insidious: Out of the Further” took fourth place. “The Odyssey” performed very well and landed in third place. “Coyote vs. Acme” hit theaters at the same time and grossed $15 million, which was enough for second place. It was a nice comeback for this film, as the studio had nearly scrapped it for good. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” secured the top spot.
The summer movie season is now officially over. It actually went quite well, coming in 25.5% above last year’s figures. We had big hits like “Toy Story 5” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2”. Theaters seem to be doing well. With major films like “Avengers: Doomsday” set to premiere soon, the end of the year promises to be quite exciting for movie fans.
