Anime Fights heroes are supposed to be the ones who win. We watch them train hard and fight for what they believe in. But sometimes it’s just impossible. Even the strongest character can face an opponent who’s simply on a whole different level. Some of these battles end in a crushing defeat, while in others it’s completely obvious that the hero never had a chance of winning from the start. Whether it’s a massive disparity in strength or an opponent with far more experience—these battles were over before they even began. Honestly, it’s really sad to watch your favorite hero fight so hard and still lose.
PAIN’S SIX PATHS MAKE JIRAIYA’S DEFEAT IN “NARUTO: SHIPPUDEN” INEVITABLE
In Naruto: Shippuden, Jiraiya ventured into the Hidden Rain Village all by himself. He didn’t know who Pain really was or how powerful he was. When the battle began, he had to face off against three of Pain’s bodies. He had to use Sage Mode and summon his frog friends just to keep up. It was tough. He had no idea that even more bodies were actually waiting for him.
Eventually, he realized that Pain controlled six different bodies. They all shared the same vision, making it nearly impossible to hit them. Once he figured that out, his chances of survival dropped dramatically. The series makes it clear that Jiraiya wasn’t trying to win the fight. He was merely trying to uncover the secret and relay that information back to Konoha. His death was very sad, but it set the stage for one of the best story arcs in the entire series.
RENGOKU FROM “DEMON SLAYER” COULDN’T OVERCOME AKAZA’S ADVANTAGES
Rengoku was such a cool character. As the “Pillar of Flame,” he was among the best. But then he had to fight Akaza. Akaza is a high-rank Level 3 demon. He’s simply much stronger. He has incredible stamina and can heal his wounds in the blink of an eye. Rengoku was able to land a few hits, but every time he dealt damage to the demon, Akaza healed himself immediately.
It was really hard to watch. Rengoku kept trying to fight an opponent who just seemed to go on forever. He gave it his all and prevented the demon from harming others, but he couldn’t land the final blow. The longer they fought, the more obvious it became that Rengoku was going to lose. He gave it everything he had.
ZORO HAD NO ANSWER TO MIHAWK’S SWORDMANSHIP IN “ONE PIECE”
Zoro wanted to become the best swordsman in the world. So he challenged Mihawk. He expected a good fight. Instead, he realized just how great the difference between them really was. Mihawk defeated him without even breaking a sweat. He used a tiny little knife!
It was like a lesson for Zoro. Mihawk showed him that he still had a long way to go. Zoro fought with all his heart, but Mihawk was simply bored. By the time Mihawk finally drew his real sword, the fight was essentially already over. It was a total defeat.
EVEN AT HIS STRONGEST, ICHIGO COULDN’T DEFEAT ULQUIORRA IN “BLEACH”
Ichigo believed his Bankai and Hollow mask would be enough to defeat Ulquiorra. He was wrong. Ulquiorra proved that Ichigo wasn’t even close to his level. Ichigo used his best techniques, but it didn’t matter at all. Then, just when things were bad enough, Ulquiorra revealed a new form. It was called “Segunda Etapa.”
This made the fight seem completely hopeless. Ichigo was already behind, and then the guy got even faster and stronger. Ichigo couldn’t do anything about it. In the end, he was seriously injured. It was hard for any fan of the series to watch.
GOKU COULDN’T DEFEAT BEERUS IN “DRAGON BALL SUPER,” EVEN AFTER HIS TRANSFORMATION INTO A GOD
Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan God should have been his big moment. But in Dragon Ball Super, this transformation was more about showing him just how much room he still had to grow. He was allowed to fight Beerus, the God of Destruction. He managed to exchange a few blows, but he could never have won.
The power gap between a mortal and a god is enormous. With every exchange of blows, it became clear that Goku was still at a disadvantage. He learned that while he could become very strong, he wasn’t yet on the level of the gods. That was a harsh reality check for him.
MUMEN RIDER FROM “ONE-PUNCH MAN” HEROICALLY REFUSED TO FLEE FROM THE KING OF THE DEEP SEA
Mumen Rider is a hero, even if he isn’t the strongest. When he fought the Deep Sea King, he knew he would lose. He didn’t stand a chance. But he didn’t run away. He stood his ground, even as the monster beat him down.
Fans love this moment. It wasn’t about him winning. It was about him being brave enough to fight for innocent people when no one else would. He was seriously injured, but he never gave up. He showed everyone what it truly means to be a hero.
DEKU VS. TODOROKI IN “MY HERO ACADEMIA” SHOWCASES THE BRUTAL LIMITS OF “ONE FOR ALL”
Deku is a very determined person. But his battle against Todoroki was simply unfair from the start. In the tournament arc, every time Deku used his power, it took a toll on his own body. He had to be extremely careful. Todoroki, on the other hand, could simply shoot ice everywhere without hurting himself in the slightest.
Todoroki also possessed fire powers that he didn’t even want to use. That gave Deku a small chance. But as soon as Todoroki began using his flames, the fight was over. Deku simply couldn’t keep up with that kind of power. He fought hard, but was at a massive disadvantage.
YUJI WAS COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED BY CHOSO DURING THE SHIBUYA INCIDENT IN “JUJUTSU KAISEN”
Yuji got into a fight with Choso during the Shibuya incident. Choso’s blood powers were simply far too strong. He was able to hit Yuji from a great distance. Yuji couldn’t get close enough to put up a proper fight.
Yuji is a smart fighter and tried to adapt. He dragged out the fight longer than was strictly necessary. Still, he couldn’t overcome Choso’s range and control. In the end, he was defeated and nearly lost his life. It was an extremely intense battle.
CHARIZARD’S DISOBEDIENCE COST ASH HIS FIRST POKÉMON LEAGUE TITLE DURING HIS BATTLE AGAINST RICHIE
Ash lost his first major League battle because his own Pokémon wouldn’t listen to him. He sent Charizard into the battle. Charizard defeated one Pokémon, leading Ash to believe he already had the victory in the bag. But then Charizard simply decided to take a nap instead of facing the next Pokémon.
Ash begged it to get back up, but Charizard just didn’t care. The referee had to stop the battle, and Ash lost. It was so frustrating to watch! Charizard was strong enough to win, but he just didn’t respect Ash yet. It was a painful end to the tournament.
RE:ZERO: JULIUS MADE SHORT WORK OF SUBARU’S CHIVALRIC AMBITIONS
Subaru didn’t stand a chance against Julius. He had insulted some real knights and was subsequently challenged to a duel with wooden swords. Julius was well-trained. He knew how to fight. Subaru had neither skill nor real physical strength.
Even with a few magic tricks, Subaru was no match for him. Julius immediately took control. Subaru thought his fighting spirit would be enough, but it wasn’t. He learned a hard lesson that day. It was an ugly fight, but maybe that was exactly what he needed to see.
