Prime Video has just announced a change regarding its major, upcoming movie about Nicolas Cage & Christian Bale Madden. The movie is actually coming out earlier than originally announced! We all expected it to be released around Thanksgiving, but now we’ll be able to watch it as early as November 18. This is super exciting for fans who’ve been eagerly waiting to see Nicolas Cage in this iconic role.
Nicolas Cage plays the legendary coach John Madden. In case you’re not familiar with him: Madden was a true legend with the Oakland Raiders. He was one of the greatest coaches of all time. Prime Video has released a video in which Cage talks about what it was like to follow in the footsteps of such a legend. He talked about how talented Madden was—both as a coach on the sidelines and later, when he became the “voice of football” on TV. Cage seems to have a lot of respect for the man. He also discussed how much Madden meant to the world of sports video games—a significant part of his legacy.
David O. Russell is directing. He co-wrote the screenplay with Cambron Clark. However, Cage isn’t the only star of the film. The cast is truly impressive. Christian Bale is also on board! He plays Al Davis, who led the Oakland Raiders for 39 years. That should create some really interesting chemistry on screen. A photo was even released showing Cage and Bale wearing Super Bowl rings together. It looks like they’re really getting into their roles.
There are also several other big names in the cast. Kathryn Hahn plays Virginia, Madden’s wife. Sienna Miller plays Carol Davis, Al Davis’s wife, who was also a co-owner of the team. Joel Murray will portray sports commentator Pat Summerall. I’m really curious to see how he nails that voice. John Mulaney also appears in the film! He plays Trip Hawkins, the man who convinced Madden to allow EA Sports to use his name for those famous video games. Shane Gillis is also part of the cast, though we don’t yet know who he’s playing.
John Madden had a truly remarkable career. He started with the Raiders and led them to their very first Super Bowl victory, Super Bowl XI. He also holds a record that’s honestly pretty crazy. He has the highest winning percentage of any NFL head coach who has coached at least 100 games. That’s just incredible. After retiring from coaching, he became a fixture as a commentator. For that, he won 16 Sports Emmy Awards. You probably remember hearing his voice back then during all those big games.
Of course, many people today know him because of the “Madden NFL” video games. The series continues to be very successful every year. The games even paid tribute to him by putting him on the cover of “Madden NFL 23”—just one year after his death. The latest game, “Madden NFL 27,” is coming out very soon, on August 13, 2026. It’s pretty cool when you think about how much his name still shapes the entire gaming world.
It’ll definitely be exciting to see how the movie sheds light on all these different aspects of his life. From his hard work on the football field to how he became a legend in gamers’ living rooms—that sounds like a lot of material to cover.
