I’m super excited to share some cool news with you! We finally know that Ryan Gosling will be taking on the role of Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a huge deal. Not only does this mean we’ll get to see a cool character on the big screen, but it also helps Marvel assemble some truly classic superhero teams from the comics. Everyone’s talking about the Midnight Sons, which would obviously be fantastic, but Ghost Rider actually opens the door for even more teams.
The “Midnight Sons” team was formed back in the ’90s. They were all about the spooky, supernatural side of Marvel. The team included characters like Blade, Morbius, and two different versions of Ghost Rider. Moon Knight and Doctor Strange were also part of it. It makes perfect sense for Marvel to assemble this team. Since Ghost Rider appears in the 2028 film directed by Shawn Levy, the timing is perfect. But believe it or not, there are other teams he could join.
After Ghost Rider, Marvel Is Only Missing 1 Member Of The Original Legion Of Monsters
There’s also the “Legion of Monsters.” This team first appeared back in 1976 in a comic called “Marvel Premiere #28.” It was sort of an early draft of the “Midnight Sons.” The big difference is that everyone in the “Legion of Monsters” is actually a monster. The Midnight Sons are a bit more flexible about who they accept into their ranks. The original lineup of the “Legion of Monsters” included four big names: “Werewolf by Night,” “Morbius,” “Ghost Rider,” and “Man-Thing.”
In fact, we already have half of this group in the MCU! The Disney+ special “Werewolf by Night” introduced us to both the main hero, the Werewolf, and Man-Thing. Once Ghost Rider shows up, only one member of the original team will be missing: Morbius. We saw a movie about Morbius in 2022, but it wasn’t really connected to the main MCU timeline and didn’t do particularly well at the box office. Marvel could simply start fresh and introduce a brand-new version of the vampire character later on.
Ghost Rider is also connected to a team called “The Champions.”
This isn’t the version with teenagers that appeared in the 2010s, but the old-school, quirky version. The original team consisted of a mix of characters you’d never expect to see together. There was Hercules, Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Angel, and Iceman. That sounds like a total hodgepodge, right? A demigod, a spy, a demon, and two mutants? That’s exactly why fans love them.
These guys formed their team when Angel and Iceman left the X-Men. On a college campus in California, they ran into Ghost Rider, Hercules, and Black Widow. They had to fight some Greek gods and decided right then and there to stick together. We already have a new Black Widow, Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. Brett Goldstein appeared as Hercules at the end of “Thor: Love and Thunder”. Now that Ghost Rider is on board too, the only ones missing are Angel and Iceman.
Even though most people aren’t very familiar with these teams, it would be exciting to see them in a movie. They’re such a quirky bunch that it could be really refreshing. Maybe they’ll become something like the next “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Marvel is already integrating the X-Men into the main universe, so we might soon get to see new versions of Iceman and Angel. Or they could simply be replaced by other mutants if necessary.
The “Legion of Monsters” could also work, even if they don’t find a new Morbius. They have Man-Thing, “Werewolf by Night,” and soon Ghost Rider. That’s a solid lineup. If they really want to, they could add more monsters like N’Katu, the Living Mummy, Sasquatch, or Gargoyle. The groundwork for that is already in place. “Werewolf by Night” has shown us that Jack Russell and Man-Thing are already friends. They’re basically already halfway to a team-up movie. Now all that’s left is for Ghost Rider to show up and bring someone along.
